VA Home Loan - Who Qualifies?
To Start the Process For A VA Home Loan, you must first apply for The "Certificate of Eligibility". Only the
Veterans Administration can issue this certificate. To be a qualified recipient you must be a Veteran, on active duty,
in the guard, a reserve or a military spouse. The issuance of the Certificate of Eligibility does not constitute or
guarantee loan approval. Strict guidelines have been established and Congress has created certain categories to
help determine who normally would qualify for the loan.
If you are on Active Duty
You must have served with a continuous status for a minimum of 90 days or you are personnel presently serving on
active duty.
Reserve Or the Guard
If you do not otherwise qualify under active service and you have been in the Reserves or National Guard for at least
6 years, or you were honorably discharged because of a service-connected disability. If you have been put on the
retired list or transferred to the Selected or Ready Reserves and you still serve or you are a Reservists or National
Guard Member activated after August 1, 1990 and you have served at least 90 days and were honorably discharged
you are also eligible.
Active Wartime Service
If you are a WWII veteran, served in the Conflict In Korean or in Vietnam between August 1964 through May of 1975
you are eligible. Those who served in the Persian Gulf War including Iraq and Afghanistan (August 1990 to present)
are also eligible If they served at least 2 years in the Persian Gulf War, Iraq or Afghanistan from Aug.1990 to present
or if the full period for which they were called to active duty.
Peacetime Service
If your active service fell within any of the following periods you would be considered a "peacetime veteran".
7/26/1947 to 6 /26/1950
2/1/1955 to 8/4/1964
If these Veterans have served a continuous 181 days of active duty and have been honorably discharged you would
qualify. If the time served was 181 days or less and was discharged with a service-connected disability that has been
recognized by the VA.
If your a Veteran whose complete active service was between these dates (If enlisted) May 8, 1975 to September 7,
1980 or (if officer) May 8, 1975 to October 16, 1981 and you were on active duty for a continuous 24 months or the
full period (at least 181 days) for which you were ordered or if you were honorably discharged with less than 181
days of service with a service-connected disability, due to a involuntary reduction in force you were released, or if
you were released because of certain medical conditions or for the convenience of the Government.
Other Services That Qualify
If you are an Un-remarried spouse of a Veteran who died as a result of their service or service recognized disability.
Spouse of a prisoner or war or a spouse of a Veteran who is missing in action.
You must be a U.S. Citizen that has served in WWII
Officer of National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, employee of the Public Health Service, merchant marine
with World War II service, if you are a cadet at a military academy and others.
